More Liberal Smear = Business as usual.

Dion stands by while one of his MP's smears the Prime Minister. Maybe he is waiting to consult with some women's council or other such group before making his move.

"Stephen Harper does not really like 52%of the population, which is women," Toronto Liberal MP Yasmin Ratansi told the rally, sparking a chant of "boot him out.

The campaign of fear is strong in this one as the desperation weighs heavy.

The original quote can be found in this National Post story , but for some real fun you have to check out some of what Dion said about Jack Layton and the NDP platform. He does a good job of describing the damage that would be done to our economy if the Green Shift the NDP platform was implemented.

"The NDP can promise you the moon but they are trying to buy your votes with monopoly money," Mr. Dion declared, "They want to pay for all their promises by increasing the burden on our economy."

"It will put at risk the stock market because the stock market is expecting to see these corporate tax cuts to come. It will put at risk Canadians savings, RESPs, pensions."
(And the Green shift is different how Stephane?)

He also noted that Manitoba NDP Premier Gary Doer and former Saskatchewan NDP premier Lorne Calvert had cut corporate taxes to create jobs.
(Careful Stephane; McGuinty might hear you)

Dion also branded Jack Layton an "old-fashioned socialist" with a "job killing" electoral platform.
(Dion actually called someone a socialist; hahaha. This stuff writes itself.)

Michael Ignatieff steps up to save the Liberal Party of Canada

Iggy steps up to try and save the Dion's led Liberal Party of Canada from disaster.

From the Toronto Star: The New Democrats and Green Party have no chance of forming government and the only way to stop the Conservatives is to vote Liberal, deputy Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff says.

And while he was at it Iggy throws a little fear into the mix as well: “If you don’t vote Liberal, Canada will go into a major economic crisis,”

Soon Iggy soon.

Excellent.

Squandered. Lost in translation?

Stephane Dion: "They inherited a surplus of $12 billion, which they have squandered within two-and-a-half years,..."

Really Stephane; Squandered?

I know that you do not balance your own cheque book, and that your ideas such as carbon tax would harm the Canadian economy, but squandered?

Maybe I as a conservative do not understand what a Liberal thinks the "function of government" is, but it is you who do not understand that this money is not Liberal money but money that was taken from the pockets of taxpayers.

It is our money.

Money that was returned to the taxpayer through cuts to the GST and the income tax rate is not squandered.

Money that was given to the Provinces in transfer payments for such things as health care (which was decimated by Paul Martin and Jean Chretien) is not squandered money. Opps, I forgot; Liberals do not believe in any fiscal imbalance.

Money, about $40 billion, that gets paid off against our national debt and reduces interest paid on that debt by over 120 million dollars a year is not squandered money.

You see Stephane; that is what the average Canadian does when they are lucky enough to have some extra cash. We try to pay off our debts. It is simple economics and common sense, but you wouldn't know that because you have no idea about the life of the average Canadian and you do not even know how to handle your own debt.

You sir are out of touch and not worth the risk.

Mohamed Elmasry: One vote the CPC will not be getting

Mohamed Elmasry a guy who has some issues with the right to free speech in Canada has come out with some 'expert' election analysis.

Source: Canada’s right-wing media have been publishing poll after poll in recent days, apparently showing that the Harper Conservatives are in the lead. This selective polling process has led them to the premature conclusion that Stephen Harper is heading for another term as Prime Minister, this time with a majority government.

But the campaign is far from over and the Harper road-show knows it. These polling figures are just another tactical maneuver aimed at demoralizing the contending parties and their supporters

It sure is nice that someone in Canada can make such ridiculous claims such as Harper controls the media and the polling companies and only get criticized in a few blogs rather than getting hauled before some kind of kangaroo speech court.

Isn't free speech a wonderful thing.

Too bad Mr. Elmasry does get it.

Jane Taber skewers Dion for the second time in 2 days.

Jane Taber doesn't think Dion is hot.

Today: Liberals already musing about potential leaders. "John Turner was given two chances. The question Liberals are asking themselves now is whether Stéphane Dion will get the same. It's not looking likely."

Yesterday: Liberals shift focus to 'living for another day'. "Not one, not a single serious Liberal is talking about Stéphane Dion becoming Prime Minister," a long-time Liberal said. "This is not about beating Harper as PM. This is about living for another day."

Ouch.

Dion is out of touch, and everyone else in the country knows it but him.

As an added bonus: Jane on Gerard Kennedy.

Fear Mongering on Abortion, What took them so long?

Even though it is totally baseless we all knew the smear was going to show up some time during the election campaign.

And today in the Toronto Star we get this:

The Conservative government is eroding women's reproductive health and right to abortion "by stealth," a group of advocates representing labour and women's rights charged this morning. "There is a clear anti-abortion hidden agenda at work that puts women's health at risk," said Carolyn Egan, of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada.

Don't you just love this line "There is a clear anti-abortion hidden agenda at work that puts women's health at risk"

Damn that PM Harper is one shrewd dude. Only he can have an agenda that is both clear and hidden at the same time while in contrast Dion seems to be having trouble tying his own shoes without help.

Keep it coming lefties; the campaign of fear worked so well the last few times that you might as well go for it yet again this year.

H/t to Joanne

The Wizard of Liberal Oz

Stephane Dion: Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

One problem Stephane; it is getting so crowded behind that curtain that it is now all but impossible to ignore by anyone.

--------

Slightly off topic but no time for a separate post:

Dion in Quebec today said this about the conservative crime proposals "Do you know one police man who agrees with this plan?"

No Stephane I do not know one policeman who agrees in tougher sentences, I know of thousands of them who do.

Stephane Dion: Out of touch with his own party, out of touch with Canadians, and out of touch with reality.

How many government employees will lose their jobs to Dion's ideological cuts.

According to Stephane Dion he is going to pay for his entire platform and create a surplus by making cuts to existing government services, and I guess the government employees who operate within them.

What is going to be cut Stephane? Which programs are going to get the red Liberal ideological axe?

Considering that the Liberals have screamed about any and every funding cut the Conservative Government has made in the last 3 years, which the Liberals have now promised to reverse, (BTW has this been included in the costing of the Liberal platform?) it should be interesting to see just where Dion plans to make these cuts. Plenty of people have speculated that the military would be the biggest target, but with the Afghan mission not concluding until 2011 it would even be below the Liberals to not properly fund our troops.

I want some answers Stephane and Co. Which programs or government service are you going to cut to pay for all of your promises?

Thank you Edmonton Police Service

Last week a member of my family was the victim of a violent crime. I am not alone.

If this situation has not yet happened to yourself or to someone you know, you are winning the battle of statistics for at least the time being; count yourself lucky but remember that this is happening everyday to some of your fellow Canadians. Leaving the discussion of the political aspect of crime and justice for another date I would take the time to thank the sharp end of the spear in the battle against crime; the police.

Thank you to the members of the Edmonton Police Services who were at the scene and saved the life of someone very close to me. I cannot possibly express in words my thanks for your actions that night. You have a job that many of us could not do and the abuse and disrespect you get from the citizenry that you protect makes the job all that more difficult. You all make a difference, thank you.

Liberals gag Dion's wife.

From the Canadian Press: Liberal Leader Stephane Dion's accomplished and outspoken wife appears to have been muzzled by the party's national campaign team.

"We got the stop light from Ottawa," said Krieber's assistant, Donna Lee Fowler, who had been organizing Krieber's schedule and setting up interviews.

"Madame was gung ho. ... Feel free to ask headquarters why they've decided to cancel all this."

However, a Liberal insider speaking on condition of anonymity said the campaign team does not want Krieber talking to the media and grabbing a share of the spotlight.

Moreover, there are fears among some senior Liberals that Krieber can't be relied upon stick to the campaign script.

Taking the spotlight away from Stephane Dion? I thought that WAS the Liberal strategy because Dion is not looking to good right now.

From the Globe and Mail:

"If Mr. Dion were any weaker, he'd need a blood transfusion."

Greg Weston on what the Liberals are thinking about Dion.

A great article about the troubles the Liberals are having with their 'leader' from Greg Weston of Sun media that I am sure will be quoted on various blogs today.

My favorite line "Dion may also be realizing he was deluded to think the more Canadians got to know him, the more they would want him as prime minister."

Deluded. Ha ha ha ha ha!

Give it a read for yourself.

Stephane Dion beats Paul Martin's record.

Stephane Dion beats a Paul Martin record from the last election. The amount of days before going negative in the campaign after promising not to do so.

The old record: In late November 2005 on the very first day of the election campaign Paul Martin promised that he would run on his record and shortly after claimed the same thing in what may have been Canada's first political sweater ad. Yet only 22 Days later the negative ads were revealed and 2 weeks later perhaps the most negative ad in Canadian political history was out in public.

Stephane Dion has always maintained that he would take the high road and not go negative in an election campaign and he reiterated this at the start of the 2008 campaign saying that the Liberals won't resort to "the negative, nasty approach of the Conservative party and their current leader."

The new record: Quick somebody call the Guinness people. Less than 12 days after the start of the 2008 campaign, Stephane Dion goes negative with the release of attack ads playing on the deaths of Canadians. Funny that the ad starts out with the words "It's a new low"

Way to go back on yet another promise Stephane! This record looks good on you but not as much as the next one that you are about to set.

Any guesses as to what record I am talking about?

Edit: more quotes, which I guess could now be considered lies by Dion as compiled by Platty.

- "I have heard that they are planning something about me -- they want to have that out in television ads as soon as possible but I will not do that. I want to take the high-road which is to compare two approaches for Canada in the 21st century," said Dion. (Winnipeg Free Press, December 15, 2006)

- "Not this negative ads, not my style" - Stephane Dion (Global National, January 30, 2007)

- Dion said the Liberals won't be running any negative ads. "We're already answering back," he said. "We're answering with policies that are good for the people." - Stephane Dion (CP, Calgary Sun, February 14, 2007)

- "I will never do that.'' - Stephane Dion (CP, February 19, 2007)

- "I will keep the high road, and I'm very convinced it's the best way to have majority support at the next election." - Stephane Dion (Globe and Mail, March 9, 2007)

- "I want to take the high road. I want to explain to Canadians what I want to do. Don't want to go in dirty politics. If he wants to play the bully, it will be his choice. I want to play the high road. I want to appeal to the intelligence of the Canadian people that I know is the best way to win the support of the Canadian people." - Stephane Dion (Mike Duffy Live, CTV Newsnet, March 8, 2007)

- "It's a very Bush style," he said with reference to U.S. President George W. Bush. "I will fight back, but not in negativity." - Stephane Dion (Montreal Gazette, March 31, 2007)

- "We're in Canada, I remind you. This kind of stuff is not good for the political system. We'll be positive. There are no plans to my knowledge for us to reply to this kind of garbage," said Liberal deputy leader Michael Ignatieff. "You don't fight garbage with garbage. What you do is go out with a positive message." (National Post, February 14, 2007)

"Like Tim Hortons distancing itself from the doughnut."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper: “Stéphane Dion distancing himself from the Green Shift is like Tim Hortons distancing itself from the doughnut."

Missing: The Green Shift

Dion's carbon tax was noticeably absent yesterday from the campaign trail as Dion talked about anything but his tax grabbing non environmental plan.

A new strategy or just abandoning a lost cause?

Today will be the key; that is if we see Dion out campaigning at all since the Liberals not only seem to be abandoning the greenshift but Dion as well.

Now that might be a winning strategy.

Free Seminar: How to make money with the Liberal carbon tax:

Dear blog reader: Do you want to be rich?

Dear reader this is your chance to learn the secrets that can make your life easier and bring in wealth beyond your wildest dreams all with the help of Stephane Dion's carbon tax. (as a special bonus today I offer a free sneak peek of one of our most basic and popular secrets. One of many that what you will learn by taking part in our exclusive seminar. Keep reading)

Our highly sought after program will teach you all that you really need to know to profit in Canada under such a repressive tax system as the Green Shift. While the rest of the population suffers under the weight of it all, you can come out ahead by applying the simple lessons learned at our exclusive seminar. But you must respond today to ensure entry.

By confirming your reservation now I will guarantee your seat at an exclusive financial seminar to be held in your area in the near future; probably at some seedy hotel out near the airport.

Here is just a small selection of available sessions:

Tax planning: Businesses really do not pay taxes. (at least with their own money)

Sending cash to your brother in law and claiming it as 'Green R&D' (sold out)

Hidden opportunities: Thriving in the black market.

Unfair disadvantage: Selling your stock in Canadian companies before the tax hits.

New business ideas: How to set up a "millions of new green jobs" employment agency.

Specialized training: The believable shoulder shrug.

The Gore: Buying carbon credits from yourself.

Investment Opportunities: Buying farmland, trucks, and fishing boats cheap.

and many many more!

This is the chance of a lifetime to get ahead of the curve and profit from Dion's Carbon tax. Seating is limited and if you want to guarantee your place you must confirm your space now.

Operators are standing by.

--------------------------------------------------------

As promised a sneak peak at our most popular session; Pass it on and then some*.

Everyone is expecting prices to raise under a carbon tax as your own and every other business passes on the increased costs to the consumer; this is expected and should not be a surprise to anyone. (see tax planning session B)

Example A . ' Your Product ' currently retails for $10 and this allows for a $2 profit. With your carbon tax hit passed on to the customer (already expected by the consumer) the new selling price will have to raise to $12.50 to maintain the current profit margin.

So why not take advantage of the expected increases and tack an a few extra bucks for yourself? In our example why not tack on another $1.50 for a new retail price of $14.00?

Your customers will complain and they will not be happy but you now have the option of just shrugging your shoulders, blaming the Liberals and counting your record profits.

*Prerequisite: Believable shoulder shrug.

Remember, this is just a short example of what you can learn at our exclusive seminar. Call now and I will see you soon.

Worthy of being seen again. Election 2008 video.

This post is going to end up being a link dump for, IMHO, what are some of the more interesting videos of the campaign. I hope you enjoy them.

The PM quick thinking on vegetables. Listen to the media laugh out loud at the end.

This was well before the call, but I like it and it is my blog.

A well done Terminator parody.

Well this one speaks for itself. Thank you CBC.

Matt's video that started it all. (already linked to here)

Dion on Israel, clueless and caught in a big lie.

"I thought this meeting was for us and not ...these bunch of media people" Dion press conference goes terribly wrong. Note his strong leadership skills. Not.

Dion has no answer but he didn't "hear" the question according to Liberal spin. Too bad he repeats the question himself.

The spin. "Maybe it was...." If you don't know Stephane who does? (he blames it on a hearing problem with a straight face)

The aftermath. Dion goes green and goes 'Hulk' on a CTV reporter

.

Paul Martin, some good news and some bad news.

First the good news: Former PM Paul Martin has been found alive and well in Halifax after being almost completely absent from the House of Commons for the last 2 1/2 years.

And now the bad news: Unfortunately it appears that Mr.Martin thinks he is still fighting the January 2006 federal election.

"In an impassioned speech to the Halifax West federal Liberal association on Sunday, Martin vowed that a Grit government would keep its promises.
He accused the Conservatives of failing to deliver on a national child-care plan, the Kelowna accord that dealt with native education, employment and anti-poverty initiatives and the Kyoto accord that called for a reduction in greenhouse gases."

How's it going Garth?

Steve Janke nailed Garth Turner 2 times yesterday. The first for using the son of his top assistant as a prop for the cameras of CPAC, and the second time when Garth replays the victim card.

Watch this video courtesy of Step to the Right as Garth meets a random Halton resident. If this does not sum up Garth Turner nothing does.

Nice to meet you indeed.

More from Garth but this time Garth is the 'victim' and how the evil ________ (insert party here) are destroying Garth's election signs because he is a ________ (insert party here).
This is made all the more funny considering this entire ploy was predicted by another blogger just days earlier.

Garth Turner doing the Liberal Party of Canada proud and showing us all how politics should be done.

The Green Party and the mistake that no amount of spin can change.

Most of you are aware of the saga of NDP blogger Buckdog last week but for those that are not here is a short highlight reel that starts when blogger Stephen Taylor posts an old video clip on YouTube of Elizabeth May saying that she thinks Canadians are stupid.

Buckdog like many other bloggers also posts the video on his site.

John Bennett, Director of Communications Green Party of Canada threatens Buckdog with legal action , from both himself and although not authorised to do so, TVO, in a very poorly written and spelling mistake laden email claiming that the video was slanderous.

Stephen Taylor clarifies the video has not been doctored and so does TVO.

John Bennett does apologize, but just can't help but add a little spin to help save his leader. (Bolding mine) "In the TVO clip, Elizabeth May clearly says "they" think Canadians are stupid, referring to the opinions of some politicians. She then turns to the questioner and agrees with HIS assessment that a carbontax is essential. No spin can change that."

Elizabeth May again goes on TVO and must think Canadians really are stupid because she tries to tell Canadians that she actually said "disagree"rather than "agree". I have yet to find a single person who believes this claim.

Which leaves us with this last thought on this subject: If May did say disagree rather than agree, what should one make about what Mr. Bennett had stated in his apology email "She then turns to the questioner and agrees with HIS assessment that a carbontax is essential. No spin can change that."

Dion to Harmonize Greenshift with B.C. Carbon tax.

Well that didn't take long. If the clip I saw tonight on the CBC National News is accurate, Stephane Dion says that he will harmonize his carbon tax with the oh so popular B.C. provincial carbon tax. (update: confirmed Dion did say he would harmonize the 2 taxes)

Here is the clip from CBC. Tell me if what I am hearing is wrong when Dion answers a question from a young gentleman asking about B.C. being punished with double carbon taxes.

That sounds like he said he would harmonize to me. Policy on the fly or was this in Dion's play book all along?

It is hard to tell what is going on as Dion has already claimed not to have spoken with Premier Campbell on this subject, even though the Premier had said the opposite, and this is by far not the first time Dion has flip flopped on a carbon tax, so nothing surprises me when it comes to Liberal policy lately.

Now we await the details or as I like to describe it as 'more policy on the fly.'

Does the money collected all stay in B.C, does the existing $100 dollars residents receive effect the GS tax cuts, how does the loss, or increase, in revenue to the feds get paid out, or paid for, by the rest of the country, how does carbon in B.C.now get priced, and other provinces, including Alberta, are taxing carbon, when can they expect a 'side deal'? I am sure there are plenty more but those are a few off the top of my head. I eagerly await the response tomorrow.

Oh, and just for fun one more question. What will Iggy say?

OK, I know that was not fair since Iggy is already in enough trouble today after he made a claim of his own about the Green Shift which totally contradicts Dion, the GS documentation, and the commitment to have 100% of the money collected to go back to Canadians via tax cuts.

Our environmental policy is very simple: we want to decrease the tax on income. Most Canadians will get a tax cut from an incoming Liberal government, and we want to raise money for roads by taxing pollution. We cannot go on treating the earth as a garbage dump"

You know; it is almost as if some people are trying to derail the Liberal election chances from within, but that is for another post.

Will Dion change his Green Shift plan again?

Because a couple of more Liberals are asking him to do just that.

David Orchard: “I've spoken out inside the party and I've made my views known that I'd like to see some changes in the proposal,” said Orchard “I don't want to see farmers or fisherman or northerners penalized for using fuels for which there is no option, they have no alternative.”

Paul Zed: "There is no tax on emissions. The Green Shift plan is not a detriment to the refinery "¦ I wouldn't be supporting this if, for a moment, I thought the refinery was in jeopardy."

Ok, Zed is not asking directly for a change but once he realizes that he is grossly mistaken in his belief that refineries are not going to be taxed he has 2 choices; not support the carbon tax, as his words above so clearly state, or ask Dion to change the plan. Which one will it be?

Will Stephane Dion make more changes to the Green Shift before the election date?

Only time will tell.

Maybe this is why she can't get elected after 5 attempts

Hana Razga, NDP candidate Edmonton-Leduc: “It makes sense with an economic point of view to tax the things that you want people to use less of. In this case it’s the carbon — cars and things that use carbon monoxide.”

This is Razga's six attempt at getting elected.

She ran for Edmonton City council in 2007, in the 2008 provincial election in Edmonton Whitemud and twice before in Edmonton-Manning (1997+2001) for the NDP, and federally for the NDP in 1997 in her home riding of Edmonton-East. Now she is at it again under the orange flag of the NDP in Edmonton-Leduc.

I wonder what Jack Layton has to say about this little gem:Because we all know how much Jack Layton supports Dion's carbon tax and the Alberta Oil sands.

"In the Edmonton-Leduc contest, that means calling for Omar Khadr’s return to Canada from Guantánamo Bay and voicing support for Stéphane Dion’s controversial carbon tax. She warned that Edmonton shouldn’t rush any expansion plans into Leduc. On the oilsands, though, she’s hesitant to call for federal action."

I feel a memo from party headquarters coming her way soon.

Some more quotes of interest from Razga:

"I think Canada has become a lot meaner country in the last 15 years, and the previous governments of Jean Chretien and with Paul Martin as his finance minister, and now it’s even worse Mr. Harper, with his law and order agenda"

She said at the same time, cap and trade has been used in Europe and it is very popular there and is working.

“They (the Conservatives) eliminated a lot funding for the status of women programs and their initiatives, they cancelled the court challenges programs, and of course, child care.”

They are like wolves in a sheep’s skin.” She said it gives her shivers to think the Conservatives could form a majority.

Update: Hana was at it again this time in Ward 8 for the Edmonton municipal election where she garnered a whopping 9.7 % of the vote.

Where will she show up next?

Dear Liberal Party of Canada.

Dear Liberal Party of Canada:

Stop trying to take away all of my hard earned money and please stop telling me what to do and how to live my life.

You are not better than me, and just the fact that you believe that you are and that somehow you know better how to live my life than myself is enough of a reason why you should never be returned to power in this country.

Thank you,

Al

Stephane Dion is an admitted separatist.

Stephane Dion is an admitted separatist. What, too far back for a quality smear? Is there a limit on this stuff?

I would have thought there was but judging by the latest Liberal Party of Canada attack website, scandalpedia, the length of time one goes back for a smear seems to have no limits. I know this is not as important topic as say cartoon puffin poop is, but this is getting ridiculous.

Right on the home page the reader is greeted by a 2001 quote from then private citizen Stephen Harper, and looking a little deeper the Liberals appear to have no qualms about digging up quotes made in the previous century, long before Stephen Harper formed a government or the CPC was born, including a couple from 1994.

In the scandals section they go back to the early 90's and their old favorite target Brian Mulroney, and I am surprised that they don't have a section on David Emerson. (maybe it is because he is not running this time so why waste a good smear on him) There is also one other interesting "scandal" that I noticed on this official LPC website, but the details were a little sketchy do to legal issues. Something about libel and slander I think.

A while back a few Liberal bloggers declared that enough time had passed since adscam ended in 2004 that the issue should be declared dead and buried never to be brought up again, but today,
September 9th, 2008, the Liberal Party of Canada decided that 2004 events be open season for at least until the year 2018.

Madness. I know Liberals like to think when Stephane Dion changes his mind, like on carbon taxes, the Conservative child tax benefit, his own Green Shift, and yes Quebec separatism, that it is a good thing , and when Stephen Harper changes his that it is a sign the he is the spawn of Satan, but can we all please stop living decades into the past.

Stephane Dion: Man of the People.

Vote for Stephane Dion; for he truly is 'the common man' with whom all Canadians can easily relate to.

After all since most Canadians have studied at a noted foreign school, have never held a real private sector job, have not obtained a drivers license or even know what a car pool is; I think Dion has earned the title of "Man of the People".

Can you relate?

I assume John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential partner in a fit of pique because the Republican money men refused to let him have the stuffed male shirt he really wanted. She added nothing to the ticket that the Republicans didn't already have sewn up, the white trash vote, the demographic that sullies America's name inside and outside its borders yet has such a curious appeal for the right.
So why do it?
It's possible that Republican men, sexual inadequates that they are, really believe that women will vote for a woman just because she's a woman. They're unfamiliar with our true natures. Do they think vaginas call out to each other in the jungle night? I mean, I know men have their secret meetings at which they pledge to do manly things, like being irresponsible with their semen and postponing household repairs with glue and used matches. Guys will be guys, obviously.
But do they not know that women have been trained to resent other women and that they only learn to suppress this by constantly berating themselves and reading columns like this one? I'm a feminist who understands that women can nurse terrible and delicate woman hatred.
Palin was not a sure choice, not even for the stolidly Republican ladies branch of Citizens for a Tackier America. No, she isn't even female really. She's a type, and she comes in male form too.
John Doyle, the cleverest critic in Canada, comes right out and calls Palin an Alaska hillbilly. Damn his eyes, I wish I'd had the wit to come up with it first. It's safer than "white trash" but I'll pluck safety out of the nettle danger. Or something.
Doyle's job includes watching a lot of reality television and he's well-versed in the backstory. White trash — not trailer trash, that's something different — is rural, loud, proudly unlettered (like Bush himself), suspicious of the urban, frankly disbelieving of the foreign, and a fan of the American cliché of authenticity. The semiotics are pure Palin: a sturdy body, clothes that are clinging yet boxy and a voice that could peel the plastic seal off your new microwave.

'Turn your guns on Levi, ma'am'

Palin has a toned-down version of the porn actress look favoured by this decade's woman, the overtreated hair, puffy lips and permanently alarmed expression. Bristol has what is known in Britain as the look of the teen mum, the "pramface." Husband Todd looks like a roughneck; Track, heading off to Iraq, appears terrified. They claim to be family obsessed while being studiously terrible at parenting. What normal father would want Levi "I'm a fuckin' redneck" Johnson prodding his daughter?
I know that I have an attachment to children that verges on the irrational, but why don't the Palins? I'm not the one preaching homespun values but I'd destroy that ratboy before I'd let him get within scenting range of my daughter again, and so would you. Palin's e-mails about the brother-in-law she tried to get fired as a state trooper are fizzing with rage and revenge. Turn your guns on Levi, ma'am.
Palin has it all, along with being vicious and profoundly dishonest. Just hours after her first convention speech, the Associated Press did a good fast listing of her untruths and I won't dwell on them.
I did promise to watch the entire convention so you wouldn't have to, but I discovered a neat trick. I switched between the convention and the 2003 folk music mockumentary A Mighty Wind on Bravo.
They were indistinguishable. Click on a nervous wreck with deeply strange hair doing a monologue on society today and where it all went wrong. Are you watching Christian belter Aaron Tippin singing Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagle Fly in the Xcel Centre in St. Paul or the actors from Spinal Tap remixing the 1966 version of Potato's in the Paddy Wagon?
Who delivered this line: "To do then now would be retro. To do then then was very now-tro, if you will." Was it Rev. James Dobson of Focus on the Family talking about Bristol Palin's shotgun wedding or was it a flashback to the Kingston Trio?
The conventioneers are nothing like the rich men who run the party, and that's the mystery of the hick vote. They'd be much better served by the Democrats. I know Thomas Frank answered this in What's the Matter with Kansas?; I know that red states vote Republican on social issues to give themselves the only self-esteem available to their broken, economically abused existence.

Lie works for Palin

But surely they know Barack Obama is not planning to finish off the ordinary hillbilly when he adjusts tax rates. He's going to raise taxes on the top 2% of Americans and that doesn't include anyone at the convention beyond the Bushes and McCains and random party management. So why cheer Palin when she claims otherwise?
Is it racism? I'm told that it is, although I find racism so appalling that I have difficulty identifying it. It is more likely the dearly held Republican notion that any American can become violently rich, as rich as those hedge funders in Greenwich, Conn., who buy $40-million mansions unseen and have their topiary shaped in the form of musical notes.
When Palin and Rudy Giuliani sneered at Obama's years of "community organizing" — they said it like "rectal fissure" — the audience ewww-ed with them. Republicans dream of a personal future that involves only household staff, not equals who need to be persuaded to vote.
So I'm trying to imagine the pain of realizing, as they all must at some point, that it is not going to happen for them. It's the green light at the end of the dock. It's the ship that never comes in, gals, as Palin would put it. But she won't because the lie works for her. It helps her scramble, without compassion, above all those other tense no-hoper ladies in the audience.
American politics isn't short of smart women. Susan Eisenhower, Ike's granddaughter, who just endorsed Obama, made an extraordinary speech at the Democratic convention (and a terrific casual appearance on The Colbert Report as Palin was speaking). The Republican party has already consumed nearly all of its moderate "seed corn," she said aptly. Time to start again.
Eisenhower, a scholar and journalist, has a point. Or am I only saying that because she's part of the thoughtful demographic that I'm trying to reach here? Think, Heather, think like a Republican! The Skeptics, shall I call them, are my base, and I'll pander to them as ardently as the Republican patriarchs tease their white female marginals.
This Week
Mad Men is scaring me (AMC on Sunday nights). What has Matthew Weiner, a writer from The Sopranos, created, a period soap opera about reality and façade or a horror series on a localized war between men and women? Was Episode 6 of Season 2 a costume drama about the Madonna/whore complex or the operatic rendition of one simple thing, human cruelty?
Or maybe I'm seeing too much into it and it's just a sexed-up version of the Republican convention.

Wow!.

The aftermath: CBC Ombudsman Report.

We are not having financial problems.

Stephane Dion and the Liberal Party of Canada: We are not having financial problems.

And except for Mr. Dion’s modest rally on Sunday, this tour has been a trio of buses roaming around Ottawa and Montreal looking for something to do while (conflict of interest declaration here) charging reporters $2,100 a day plus hotels for the tagalong privilege.

Dion and the Liberals are charging $2100 a day to reporters.

Tracking the Lie: The CPC has cut funding for womens programs.

I need your help. (Please see this previous post) I am going to attempt to track one of the biggest lies that the Conservatives have faced from almost the beginning of their time in government.

The Lie: The Conservative Government has cut funding to Women's programs. i.e. The Status of Women.

The Truth: News release: The budget of the Women's Program has been increased by 42 percent, bringing it to its highest level ever of $15.3 million.

If you see/hear this lie being used please drop a link into the comments and I will update this post as necessary.

It is much harder to spread lies like this if those spreading the lies know they are being watched and know they will be called out on their smears.

_________

Sept 07, 2008 less than 2 hours after the writ is dropped the Canadian Press spreads lies:"The autumn of their first year in power, the Conservatives galvanized one angry constituency with $2 billion in spending cuts that targeted such things as the court challenges program, adult literacy and women's programs - while posting a $13 billion surplus for 2005-2006" * * (26 Google hits for this story)

Sept 08, 2008: Liberal MP Diane Marleau in the Sudbury Star. "I've been travelling this summer as chair of the Women's Caucus. It's evident a lot of damage has been done ... They say they're not cutting the money, but they're not giving it out. Most groups have been weakened and they're the groups that are the most vulnerable." and just for fun another quote from Marleau: "I fear if Harper comes back we won't have much of a country left. We happen to believe government is a force of good in our society."

Sept 10, 2008:" Mr. Dion said the Conservative government of Stephen Harper has turned the clock back on gender equality and women’s representation. He eliminated the national child care agreements, cancelled the Court Challenges program, removed the word ‘equality’ from the mandate of Status of Women Canada and cut funding which forced 12 of 16 regional Status of Women Canada offices to close."

The court challenges program was just for women? Who would have known; I thought it was for serious wrongs such as complaints about having to pay for your own nanny.

Antonia "The Harper government also jerked around Status of Women Canada. First it slashed its budget by nearly 40 per cent and stripped "equality" from its mandate. Later, when it restored funding, it had essentially robbed women of important legal mechanisms to fight for equal rights and equal pay."

It wasn't just restored, it was increased by 42% and the entire process cleaned up so more women's organizations could be included in the process rather than just your far left friends who think it is just fine to attack Sara Pallin because she is a women. You are not a feminist AZ, your just another lefty who thinks you know how everyone should think and live their lives.

.

Game on!

The writ has been dropped.

I will be calling for my lawn sign later today.

Repository of Liberal Lies and Smear.

I need your help.

Repository of Liberal Lies and Smear: Election 2008, Status of Women Addition.

I will be starting a post that will deal with and track 1 big lie that I expect to be hearing from Liberals and their rapid supporters across the country, over the course of the election campaign.

The lie: The Conservative Government has cut funding to the Status of Women.

I will be asking, in an upcoming post once the writ is dropped so please not here, that anyone who notes the use of this lie in this current election campaign by a Liberal MP, candidate, blogger etc, to please let me know and drop a link in the comments of that post.

A pre writ example: "Thibault countered that neither Ambrose nor LeBreton are credible defenders of women's rights given that they sat in cabinet when the Conservative government cut funding for the status of women program."

Why am I doing this? Read on.

I started out tonight writing a post tentatively titled "Stephen Harper is a monster". The basic idea was to point out how the Liberals attempt demonize their opponents in elections as have in the past, are currently trying to do, and will definitely do in the up coming campaign, but while I was typing away I ran into a few problems.

The first was that I had too many examples of this being SOP for the Liberals, the second was that because of all the examples that I found out there I had way too many links to find and include, and the third was that there was way to many various smears and lies to deal with in a book never mind a single blog post. This makes for a very messy post and a realization that I need some big time help trying to keep track of all the lies and smears that we can all expect to see over the next few weeks.

So in an effort to keep it simple I decided that I would track just one big lie, about funding cuts to the Status of Women, and ask others bloggers out there to do the same for any one of the many other examples of Liberal lies and smear out there; such as the ever popular Bush= Harper smear, cuts to the arts or other programs, tax cuts, Afghanistan, same sex marriage, federal debt reduction, abortion, immigration, softwood lumber, foreign aid, human rights, hidden agenda, etc. I am sure you can easily come up with one of your own as there are many examples.

So if you are interested in the idea please feel free to pick a smear or lie and document just how many times you (or your blog readers) find the Liberals using it over the campaign. It will take some work, but there might be a payoff for the effort.

Over the years I have noticed that it is not that easy for someone to lie when they are being watched and exposed on those lies, and with a little luck this effort will make just a bit harder for the Liberals to pull the Campaign of Fear™ out of their playbook this time around.

Comments and ideas welcome.

Bill Casey Honourary Green and other GP News

Green Party leader Elizabeth May announced that her party considers Independent Member of Parliament Bill Casey "an honourary Green". The Green Party of Canada and its Electoral District Association in Cumberland—Colchester—Musquodoboit Valley will not be opposing the re-election of Mr Casey.

I think Elizabeth May might be angling for the 'real' first Green MP. I wonder if she can convince her good buddy Stephane Dion to not run a Liberal in the riding.

UD: from the comments "So in conclusion, Ms. Environment suppports Casey as an honorary Green party member for supporting an Atlantic Accord which would have supported more offshore oil development. So Ms. May stands now with the Republicans in supporting more offshore oil development. A proud moment for the Green Party of Canada.'

In other GP news: John Shavluk, the Green Party candidate who threatened to sue the blog Dust my Broom for exposing an anti Semitic posting, has been told that he can not run as a candidate for the GP in the upcoming election.

"The Green Party has announced that John Shavluk will not be the candidate for the party in Newton—North Delta, following revelations that he made comments in 2006 on an online discussion forum that are anti-Semitic."

I guess now he will have all the extra time he needs to get to the bottom of what really happened on Sept 11, 2001.

How long?

IF the election campaign does start in the next few days how long do you think it will take before we hear Liberals saying the following:

A vote for the NDP is a vote for the conservatives.

And my personal favorite, which pretty much means that the Liberals will have already given up on winning the election: We must fight to ensure that Stephen Harper does not get a majority.

I expect we will hear both statements in one form or another in the up coming 40 or so days, but when?

Dion's campaign of hope starts.

"We need to win against the most right-wing prime minister in the history of our country," Mr. Dion thundered. "Stephen Harper wants to give George W. Bush a third term in Ottawa."

"Stephen Harper is more pro-Brush(sic) than John McCain."

source.

I don't want to split hairs but is PM Harper more"Pro-Brush" or is he anti-comb Stephane?

Keep the hope coming Mr. Highroad and remember what you said just a few days ago.

Dion added the Liberals will work to win the hearts and minds of Canadians in appealing to their noble sentiments and to their positive will to do the right thing. He said the Liberals won't resort to "the negative, nasty approach of the Conservative party and their current leader."

A Headline that tells the truth.

This might have been better after the election rather than before but...

Tories 'destroyed' us: Dion

Liberals inadvertently reveal more lies about the Green Shift

By now I am sure you have all read the latest news that Dion is going to try to modify his carbon tax proposal after his much ballyhooed summer tour trying to sell this bad piece of policy to Canadians failed miserably. While the story about how the Liberal sales job of the Green Shift has been a complete failure is damning enough in itself; hidden away in the latest Liberal rhetoric is something even more damning as it reveals just how Dion and the Liberals have been lying about the carbon tax from day 1.

Here is what Dion is now proposing: Dion will announce that part of the $1 billion contingency fund in his plan, designed for tax relief to address the unavoidable costs associated with the carbon tax, will be set aside for truckers, farmers and fishermen. "There's $1-billion wiggle room," said Montreal MP Marlene Jennings. "We've never said that the plan, in terms of the spending side, is complete, because it's not. There is money that we're setting aside in order to be able to assist sectors that are going to be particularly hard-hit."

A 1 billion dollar contingency fund?

Now how exactly can a plan "that every dollar that is raised from carbon pollution will be returned to Canadians in tax" cuts." and a plan where "This shift will be done in a revenue neutral way –putting it in law that every dollar that is raised from carbon pollution will be returned to Canadians in tax cuts." possibly have a contingency fund if every penny collected will be going back to Canadian taxpayers?

It absolutely cannot be done, that is unless of course someone has been lying to Canadians since day 1.

A couple of other pertinent questions:

Just how did Dion and the Liberals plan to slip a billion dollar fund made up of money that was promised to go back to the taxpayer past the Auditor General, who the Liberal have promised would oversee the revenue neutrality of the carbon tax?

If the Green Shift was going over well with Canadians at this time, does anyone honestly believe that the money would go back to the taxpayers?

And perhaps the most important question of all: What did the Liberals really plan to do with this fund?

Update: Buried in Dion's carbon tax is a note on the creation of a special fund. "Contingency offset. We will set aside $1 billion over four years ($100 million in the first year growing to $400 million in the fourth year) which will be reserved for tax cuts designed to off-set the impact of the carbon tax on groups such as not-for-profit organizations and charities. This contingency offset will also be used to design tax relief to address unanticipated and unavoidable costs associated with the new price on carbon for the most vulnerable in society."

So are farmers and fisherman non profit organizations, charities, or part of the most vulnerable of our society? I am sure they would like to know and eagerly await an answer from Dion.

By the way, when did a subsidy become a tax cut?
