Neither rain nor snow......

Out on the campaign trail last evening in Edmonton Millwoods Beaumont with incumbent Mike Lake and a few volunteers as they door knocked their way through a nasty spring snow storm. Although the heavy wet snow made for some tough going at times, it was clear at the doors that the effort was appreciated.

If you live in the Edmonton Millwoods Beaumont area and have even a couple of hours of free time to volunteer give the campaign office a call @ 780-466-0195, and if you live elsewhere please give your local CPC candidates campaign office a call. Election campaigns are won locally and on the ground. Any help that you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

EKOS Poll Dancing

I wonder why the Sept 1-7 poll was never made public on the 9th as is typical with EKOS CBC polls, and why the info showed up in the 16th data?

Maybe the CBC was trying to save some cash and didn't want to cough up that week or maybe it was some other reason, but I doubt we will ever get the answer or find out if our publicly funded broadcaster ponied up for that week or not. My guess is that their deal with EKOS, spending our tax dollars, is one of those things that the CBC wants to keep secret from us.

In the last year...

Tonight marks the 1 year anniversary of Ryan Hastman's nomination as the Conservative candidate for Edmonton Strathcona; the only riding in Alberta that is currently not held by the conservatives.

For those that may not be aware, Edmonton Strathcona is currently being held by the NDP and represented in Ottawa by Linda Duncan. Duncan won a squeaker in the 2008 election by less than 500 votes over the now infamous Rahim Jaffer. Edmonton Strathcona is the one yellow spot on a sea of blue that quite frankly needs to be taken back, and thankfully we have the candidate to do just that.

From June 17, 2009, when Ryan Hastman won the Conservative nomination in another incredibly close vote, Hastman has been working tirelessly towards winning back the seat for the conservatives. Ryan has been to countless events both inside and outside the riding, he and his team have been aggressively fund-raising to build up the much needed election war chest, and most importantly he has been extremely active within Edmonton Strathcona having already knocked on over 9000 doors meeting with and talking to the people of the riding. From what I have been told, and from personal experience, I can tell you that the response at the doors has been very encouraging; so much so that the NDP has taken notice at a national level and is targeting the riding to help out the worried Linda Duncan



and she has good reason to be worried, because if honest hard work has anything to do with the results of the next election, there will be a much different outcome for Duncan and the NDP in "Battleground Alberta".

Somebody is getting nervous in Edmonton Strathcona

Is Linda Duncan, the NDP MP for Edmonton-Strathcona, getting nervous?

Here is a sign that she is: from the Edmonton Journal a few weeks back. More distressing, she said, is that Ryan Hastman, the Conservative nominee in Edmonton Strathcona, did appear at a number of funding announcements in the riding over the summer. "I find it really inappropriate," she said. "I am the elected official for this riding, whether they like it or not. I have been duly elected. In protocol, it would be the appropriate thing to simply invite me."

Taking shots in the press at your main political opponent, in this case Conservative Party candidate Ryan Hastman, is a good sign that Ms. Duncan has at a minimum been paying attention to the competition.

Since his nomination win back in June of this year, Ryan has been going door to door almost non stop meeting the constituents of Edm_Strathcona. He has already knocked on 1000's of doors and he plans do knock on many more before any possible upcoming election. I went door knocking with Ryan back when the weather was much more pleasant than it is today and I can tell you first hand the he is getting noticed and making a very favorable impression on the ground. The impression I got that night was that the MP previous to Duncan, and Duncan herself were 'not very active' in the riding and they appreciated being able to talk with Hastman.


Her complaint that Ryan Hastman attending some funding announcements is somehow inappropriate is laughable when you consider that she also said the following"To tell you the truth, I've noticed that I am attracting a lot of money to my riding," she said. "We had a very nice, sizable grant to the Fringe, grants to Kings University, Newman College, LRT expansion and so forth." Duncan, though, was critical of the way the grants have been handed out, calling the various infrastructure plans "political slush funds. Nice try. Duncan wants to be able to claim credit in attracting money into the riding but also is maintaining that infrastructure plans are just"Political slush funds". You can't have it both ways , pick one Linda. Oh, and having Ryan Hastman, or any other resident of Edmonton Strathcona for that matter, attend a public announcement is neither distressing or inappropriate.




So what do you think. Is Linda Duncan getting nervous?

I believe she is, but if I am wrong and she isn't, she should be. With Hastman's work ethic, a dedicated team backing him up, and the ability to run a fully funded campaign, Linda Duncan is going to be in for quite the battle when ever the writ is dropped. That she can count on.

BC Teachers, Wildrose, Ogopogologogate

I was out with the flu for a couple of days and need to catch up on a few thoughts.


So the BC Teachers union invites their members to the following event. "Teaching 2010 Resistance," aimed at developing ways to teach children about the dark side of the Olympic Games, to be held Oct. 28 at Lord Strathcona Elementary, is being organized by the Olympic Resistance Network and Teach2010.org, which calls itself "a collaborative website for teachers to post and find resources for teaching the 2010 Winter Olympics from a critical perspective."

If the BCTF's claims that this is not political agenda, but rather just an exercise in critical thinking are to be believed, then when can we expect to see the BCTF invite their members to teaching seminars on such topics as objections to gay marriage, or why global warming may just be the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on man kind take place? This reeks.

How much will one picture cost? No really. What will be the total cost, paid for by the taxpayers of Canada, to proceed with all of the investigations that the Liberals are now asking for:

• the Liberals have filed dozens of complaints with the ethics commissioner,
• they have asked Elections Canada to begin an investigation,
• they have asked the Public Service Commission to investigate,
• and, the Liberals have requested that the auditor general investigate

over something that the PM has already said was wrong and will not happen again. The overplay on this may backfire on the Liberals because it re-enforces the notion of the Liberals playing political games; but hey, that's just me thinking out loud.


The public is tired of this crap from all the parties. Do your fricking MP jobs and re-write the rules so we don't have ANY PARTY doing this in the future and stop playing expensive games of gotcha with my money.

The real reason.....

It is not that all of the media and LPC hype surrounding Ignatieff, about how with one twitch of an eyebrow women would swoon and men would succumb to his awesomeness, has utterly failed with the Canadian public. It is not that even in the worst economic times this country has had in decades that Ignatieff is unable to gain support in the polls. It is not the fact that the Liberal brass tossed aside democracy and burned through a lot of political goodwill with their own members to appoint a dud (Ignatieff) as leader. No; none of these are the real reason why everyday Liberal strategists and the elite back room power brokers wake up screaming or are banging their heads on their desks thinking about the failed expectations and wondering what has gone so wrong.

And it is moves like this that show why PM Stephen Harper is a pure political genius and that those desks at Liberal Party HQ are going to continue to take a pounding for the foreseeable future.

While some people take the summer off......

While some people take the summer off, others are continuing to work.

Take for example this little bit from the news.

While Michael Ignatieff enjoys his summer off and walks in parades that were in a large part paid for by a grant from the Federal Government; that very same Harper led government continues to work for Canadians and signs a free trade deal with Jordan.



Agree or disagree on some of their specific policies, any objective observer would have to admit that the Conservatives have run an effective government. Perfect they are not, but they are getting it done with regards to running that behemoth known as government.

Did you know that since November of last year this government has had 26 pieces* of legislation reach royal assent? Not bad considering the world wide recession, the coup attempt, a forced deficit budget, and a new arrogant Liberal leader who changes his positions almost daily.

*This does not include the crime legislation that is currently being held up by the Liberal dominated senate while coincidentally at the very same time we see Liberal MPs running around the country claiming to be tough on crime.

We have a winner. Ryan Hastman has won the CPC nomination for Edmonton-Strathcona.

In what was a late night Wednesday in Edmonton-Strathcona for the 3 candidates vying for the CPC nomination. In the end in what was described as a "redonkulous close" vote, Ryan Hastman was declared the winner over Linda Blade and Cathay Wagantall. With such good candidates it was not an easy choice for the residents of ES; congratulations to all of you for running such excellent campaigns.

Now the real work begins.

The Nomination Candidates: Edmonton-Strathcona.

Tonight is the last of 2 scheduled CPC nomination candidates forums which will be taking place at the Granite Club, 8620-107 St at 7 p.m. If you are a current member please take the time to come out and listen to the candidates and get informed. One of these three is going to become the Conservative candidate in the next federal election and with a bit of hard work will become your Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Strathcona.

The candidates: some background and some personal thoughts on each.

Linda Blade: Website. Linda has been married for 20 years and has 2 children, she has a PhD in Kinesiology, has conducted research and sport-related seminars at the university level in Africa, Asia, North America and South America and is currently the Sports Performance Manager at the RoyalGlenora Club. She was the Canadian Champion in the Heptathlon 1986 and Pentathlon (indoor) in 1987 and represented Canada in international competition. She has been active in the community being a founding member of the Edmonton Sports Council and the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry as well as having experience as a multiple term Board Director for Athletics Alberta.

Some personal thoughts and opinions: If I could sum up Linda in a single word it would be energy. This is quite evident when you meet her in person and her success in the world of sports both personally and with training/coaching others bears this out. While not having the most political experience of the bunch she is well aware of the situation in Edm-Strathcona and after speaking with her it is clear that she knows what it will take to win and the determination to make it happen. Her performance at the candidates forum was good and she was able to show off some of that energy as well as her political skills in a public setting.


Ryan Hastman: Website. Ryan is married and is a graduate of the University of Alberta School of Business. He speaks French, started his own business and was also founding director of the Edmonton Young Professionals association and Her Dream Next Door, a mentoring organization for young women. Politically Ryan has been active on many boards in the past and he recently returned home to Edmonton after working in Ottawa for a senior cabinet minister and in the Prime Minister's Office.

Some personal thoughts and opinions: Ryan may be the youngest of the candidates (which could be an asset in the riding) but he has plenty of political experience. His ability to speak French has to be considered a plus and he too knows what is required to win back the riding and has some good ideas towards achieving that goal. His performance in the forum was very good and I was impressed that he used no notes. He came across as very approachable with good political knowledge and instincts, and looks to be a good team player with fresh ideas for the conservatives.


Cathay Wagantall: Website. Cathay has been married for 33 years and has 3 married children and 5 grandchildren. She studied Physical Education at the University of Saskatchewan and served as Athletic Director at Taylor College and Seminary as well as in development, accounting, and student loans. She and her husband have ran their own business and she has been very active in the community. Politically Cathay has served on Conservative Party of Canada Board of Directors for Edmonton – Mill Woods – Beaumont since 2004 where she has been the Election Readiness Chair, President, and Financial Agent, she was a delegate to the last 2 Conservative National Conventions and was the campaign manager for MP Mike Lake for 2 successful election campaigns.

Some personal thoughts and opinions: Here is where my bias is going to show through. Having personally worked with Cathay in the past, briefly on the 2006 campaign and to a much greater extent on the 2008 campaign, I can safely say that she has a work ethic that is second to none after having seen her in action. This work ethic combined with her history and desire to serve the community will be a strong asset. Her performance at the forum was good as she came across as straight forward and honest, demonstrated a good grasp of politics both locally and nationally and like the others she knows what it will take to win in the riding.





Having spoke with each of the candidates and after having attend the first forum I can honestly say that any of them would make a good representative both locally and in Ottawa for the people of Edmonton-Strathcona. All have expressed and shown a willingness to work hard to serve their communities and have committed to increase the conservative presence in the riding. All are supporters of PM Harper, all have expressed a belief in conservative principles, and all have shown that they know what it will take to turn Edmonton-Strathcona blue once again. But only one will get to face off against incumbent Linda Duncan of the NDP and it is going to be up to the CPC members of Edmonton-Strathcona to make the decision on which of these three worthy candidates gets the nomination.

So get out, get informed, and choose wisely.




The nomination vote will take place Wednesday June 17, 2009 at the Delta Hotel South located at 4404 Gateway Blvd NW.

Voting will take place between 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Note time change!

The ballot will be preferential where you list your first, second, third choice.

The PM in Edmonton.

The Prime Minister was in town today and dropped into NAIT to announce the $40 Million Apprenticeship Completion Grant program which will offer $2,000 to eligible apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeship training and certification in a designated Red Seal trade. The Grant will also boost worker mobility, as the Red Seal workers’ credentials are recognized in most provinces and territories of Canada. Speaking as someone who recently spent 2 days trying to find a plumber, this is money well spent in my opinion.


Later in the day was a meet and greet at the Weston Hotel. I grabbed a quick shot of the welcoming committee as I entered the hotel.

Contrary to rumours circulating inside the Weston, there appeared to be no Liberal MPs to be found amongst the welcoming committee.

Inside ( LS was right!) while everyone was waiting for the guest of honour to arrive I decided to do some investigative blogging and managed to track down and identify the elusive Hunter from Climbing out of the Dark. OK, she wasn't that difficult to find if one is a regular reader of her blog, but none the less it was a pleasure to meet a fellow blogger and her companion for the day, Rigger. Don't worry Hunter your secret is safe with me. No one will ever know in reality that you are a 6' 2" man who walks with a limp.

The PM made a short speech which was a little different than what I have become accustomed to hearing. It might have been the supportive audience or the fact that there were no press around but I can honestly say that I have never heard him sound as casual and relaxed as he did today. After the speech was over he made a point of meeting everyone in the room, including yours truly. He looked well rested after his recent European trip and seemed to be honestly enjoying himself meeting everyone and posing for the obligatory photos. All in all it was very refreshing to see and a far cry from the way he is portrayed by the opposition and sometimes the media.

Mike Lake, Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of Industry

Mike Lake, MP for Edmonton Millwoods Beaumont, today was sworn in as Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of Industry.

Congratulations Mike. It is not that easy to be recognized when you are an Alberta Conservative MP and this is really quite the accomplishment, and if I may say so, a well deserved one.

900 Days

The most public scandal in the history of Canada.

If the CPC were really trying to hide their dealings in the so called "In and Out" scandal, they have not been doing a very good job of it. So in an effort to help out, I humbly offer up some suggestions as to what is normally done when you are secretly conspiring to break the law.

Keep it small. Involving numerous candidates, official agents, countless local campaign workers, party staff, and an outside advertising agency with all of it's employees, does not a secret make.

Don't file factual forms and paper work. A good scandal requires you to make stuff up. Actually putting the correct information about money spent on the Election Canada paperwork is just bad scandal form.

Don't challenge those that make the rulings. Poking a bear with a stick will only cause problems, and not recommended when conducting shady dealings.

Do not go public by bringing your actions before courts. Anyone involved in a scandal knows that secrecy is the key. Using the courts, or the media kind of blows the clandestine nature of your average conspiracy out of the water.

Don't take lessons from the opposition parties. Yes the Liberal Party of Canada did manage to get away with Adscam as far as Elections Canada is concerned and they WILL NEVER have to reveal just which Liberal candidates got that money, but..... Oops, just hang on a minute. Maybe taking lessons from the Liberals is a good idea when you are planning a conspiracy after all.

Toughening up Consumer Product Laws

The good news stories about the Conservative government continue with yesterdays announcement of an overhaul of Canada's outdated product safety laws . Some of these old laws and regulations have not been updated in decades nor have they kept up with the changes of todays world wide economy. At least not until yesterday.

In what has already been a good week for getting things done for Canadians, this can only be called another feather in the cap of the Prime Minister.

Congratulations Mr. Harper on continuing to do what most Canadians expect their government to do; while the desperate Liberals go back in time, almost as long as some of these outdated product laws, looking for dirt to try to smear your government with.

It is all the Liberals have.

Ad Campaign thoughts.

Having just read this story from CTV about a possible advertising campaign from the CPC aimed at Liberal Leader Stephane Dion, I am having mixed emotions.

From CTV:
"One of the ads is a clip from the Liberal leadership campaign."You don't know how hard it is to set priorities," Dion states in one ad as a perplexed Ignatieff looks on, according to a Tory source.
Another ad mocks Dion's failure as environment minister to meet the Kyoto climate change targets."We didn't get it done." Deputy Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says to Dion in an exchange taken from the Liberal leadership race".


If the news story is true it would seem that I am a bit of a trend setter as I posted THIS back on January18th, and THIS back on January 15th.

Hooray for me, but I am just a humble blogger and can do this kind of stuff with little or no repercussions other than maybe being called a few names from the other side. Having the CPC do it while NOT in an election campaign has the potential to cause some problems, and I am not sure it is such a great idea.

The rational for the adds does makes sense to me. The MSM has given Dion a pass for the most part on his record as environment minister and on a few other items as well; which candidates did get those bags of money anyway Mr. Dion? The ads could be benificial, I am just question the timing.

Why the MSM has not been more forceful in their questioning of Dion and his record is beyond me, but I do not think it is going to last much longer and definitely will not last into an election campaign as the interest of the Canadian public climbs and the MSM ramps into high gear looking for 'the story' in competition to out do each other.

I guess we will have to wait and see if the story is indeed true and what the adds look like, but the possibility of having this turn south on the CPC is indeed real and I don't think the risk is justified at this time. Besides, if Dion has shown us anything about his leadership skills to this point it is that he is consistently inconsistent, and that will bite him on the ass in good time.

Earlier in the week we had the announcement about reverse onus for bail being granted those arrested for gun crimes, at which lefty Toronto Mayor David Miller and Ontario's Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty stood by PM Harper as he made the announcement. Combine that with the standing ovation the PM received in the House of Commons earlier in the week and you can see that the spirit of the season has overtaken the opposition and the PM's detractors. Well, it is either that or people recognize good policy when they see it. I lean more towards the good policy argument myself, but it is the festive season.

Also from earlier in the week, Canadians of present day as well as those of future generations received a bit of Christmas cheer when Finance Minister Jim Flaherty gave us his financial update. Paying down the debt is good, just take a look at your credit cards in January and try to tell me different.

All in all it has been a wonderful week to be a Conservative, and Prime Minister Harper has given us all a look at something Canadians haven't seen much of under their trees for a number of years. Leadership folks, its called leadership and it's a gift that keeps on giving.

Leader of a country

It has been a few days since I have had any time to pay attention to the news, much less string together a few sentences and make a blog post, but today I had some spare moments and it looks like my timing couldn't have been better.

Today Canadians have again witnessed something they are not used seeing on a regular basis from Ottawa and their federal government. To quote Craig Oliver, "In what maybe his finest moment since becoming Prime Minister; Harper trumped a separatist motion, on Quebec independence, with one of his own." To put it in my words, Stephen Harper displayed leadership and has shown again that indeed he is the Prime Minister of Canada and of all Canadians.

For all the fears from the opposition during the last election campaign of how much of a monster he was going to be, the reality has been very much different. Pandering to special interests is not how this guy does business. On almost every issue the PM has taken a stand, based not on what the polls or even his so called 'base supporters' desire, but on what was the correct thing to do.

This motion trumps the Bloc's motion, gains big support in Quebec, received positive reviews by the MSM, has done something long overdue, pisses off many of the so called base, and in a very ironic bit of fallout, may just have saved Michael Ignatieff's bacon and that of the Liberal party who have been torn apart over the "Quebec nation' issue. Today's motion is just one example, income trusts another, and the foreign policy stance of this government has taken on more than a few issues has also shown that sometimes the right thing may not be the popular thing to do.

This guy just keeps continuing to impress me, and today I think he may have impressed an entire country. Not everyone agrees with him, but none can argue that is has not shown leadership as the Prime Minister of Canada, and is nowhere near the right wing pandering monster that he has been portrayed as in the past.

Can you see the difference?

Yesterday our Federal Government did something that should not only go over well with the general population, it also clearly illustrates the differences between the Conservatives and the opposition Liberals and NDP with regards to finances.

To highlight the point here are a couple of quotes on the announced cuts/surplus/debt payment.

"To do these announcements of huge cuts to the least privileged Canadians at the same day you announce a $13-billion surplus, it tells you a lot about the Conservative frame of mind," said Liberal finance critic John McCallum.

Said NDP MP Charlie Angus: "We've seen an exercise in ideology. They're sitting on a massive surplus, the debt is at its lowest level in 30 years, and it would continue to decrease regardless of what was done today."


These 2 have figured it out, but yet they do not really understand. It will be the fact that they do not understand that will also keep them both in opposition for some time to come.


Have you figured it out yet? I think most of you have judging by your choice of internet reading material, but for those of you that might be of the leftist persuasion please allow me to explain it to you.

The money that made up the surplus and the money that was being wasted on questionable programs belongs to the taxpayer and not to the government. The Conservatives know this and respect this fact, while the other guys have not figured it out and continue to think that it is their own money to do with what they wish.



The NDP socialists are a lost cause, but you would think that perhaps the 'new + improved' Liberals might have done a little re-think recently on their treatment and respect for the tax payer and our money. Does anyone over there not remember that little Adscam thing?


Now which one of these differing styles do you think closer reflects the views of the average Canadian who has to make their own tough monetary decisions on almost a daily basis?
