Jack, a hypothetical for you. Would you resign from the NDP caucus if on the day the election writ was dropped you were named in a lawsuit from, well lets just say, a conservative blogger from Alberta as an example?

Rare Kudos for Jack Layton
I don't do it often here on the blog, but Jack Layton deserves some recognition for displaying some class on the Governor General issue.
Layton, as opposed to Ignatieff, was able to keep his mouth shut, not hold a press conference, and did not feel compelled to abuse the trust placed in him by the PM who reached out and asked Layton for his thoughts on the selection of a new GG.
Way to go Jack, you are hands down a better, and smarter, politician than Ignatieff is or ever will be. You deserve to be in the OLO office more so than the current occupant.

Jack Layton, 2 minutes for interference.
Compare and contrast.
While PM Harper was sitting in the stands with Wayne Gretzky cheering on our men's hockey team during the gold medal game at the Olympics, Jack Layton was in Gretzky's Bar in Toronto waiting for the camera to go live so he could get his face on national television; and he was not going to let anyone get in his way. As you can see from the following.
Another video. Look closely at everyone's eyes around Jack, they are looking at the televisions while Jack is looking at the camera. That kind of proves the NDP spin, that Layton was trying to see the TV, is nothing but BS doesn't it.
Stay classy Jack.
I was going to make a separate post on the Olympics but this is as good a place as anywhere to make a few comments.
Some praise and a few failures.
Praise:
VANOC, well done. You managed to pull it all off in-spite of the weather problems and a temperamental hydraulic cauldron arm. (nice touch making light of it in the closing ceremonies)
CTV: while I am not normally full of praise for CTV I have to give credit where credit is due. CTV and the other partners did an outstanding job of covering the games from start to finish and your live coverage was an example to the world of the right way to do things. The only thing that might have made it all better would have been to provided a little bit more in-depth back coverage on our athletes as the American broadcaster NBC did so well with their athletes. Well done CTV,Rogers, TSN,and RDS.
Our athletes: What can I say; you made us all proud with your efforts and accomplishments. 14 gold medals was well beyond anything that we could have expected and you have made a nation proud. You did own the podium!
The Canadian public: What can I say; the enthusiasm and patriotism shown for the games and our athletes deserves full marks, I only hope that this spirit will last longer than the 17 days the games did. We have a lot to be proud of and there is nothing wrong with being proud of this fact.
PM Harper: Thank you for proroguing Parliament and allowing Canadians to enjoy the games without all of the nonsense in Ottawa distracting us on a daily basis. Sure some are going to jump on me for saying this but the country really was better off because of it.
Fails:
The Olympic protesters: A big fail. You took advantage of what this country offers and abused it by breaking windows and other such nonsense. Thankfully it was short lived.
CBC and all the other negative Nellie's who were quick to jump all over the games and our early performance. Peter Mansbridge complaining about not being able to show footage from the games after the CBC had done the same thing for years was the height of hypocrisy and the continued 'all negative all of the time' coverage that the CBC is known for did nothing but harm their reputation. As for all of those mocking the "own the podium" program long before the results were known, you are pathetic, and while I don't expect any of you to admit you were wrong and apologize, it might be nice if the next time you would wait until the results were known before going all negative. (like that will ever happen)
Jack Layton: see above.
While this is not a real fail, I think Loblaws/Superstore might want to re-think promoting their "blue menu" product by tying it to, and claiming it, as a reason for the success of a particular group of athletes when that group of athletes were shut out of the medals. You can't have it both ways here, if you want to claim the product was responsible for the success it must also be responsible for the lack of it as well; but we are Canadian after all so I won't rub it in.
Speaking of corporate sponsorship and advertising, if some company does not jump at the opportunity to get our ice dance team of Virtue and Moir to promote their company they are fools. These 2 are golden in more ways than one and they should be lining up to get these 2 to represent their company.

The Coalition reunites?
Thwarted in late 2008 by PM Harper's legitimate use of prorogation, which saved this country from permanent divisions and possibly even from being torn apart, the coalition looks to have reunited again in 2010 in an attempt to remove the only obstacle that prevented them from seizing power in 2008 and installing failed Liberal leader Stephane Dion as our Prime Minister, Jack Layton into cabinet, Elizabeth May into the Senate, and given separatist Gilles Duceppe a de facto veto over government business.
Think about that for a minute. If either of the current NDP or Liberal proposals to limit the PM's right to prorogue Parliament had been in place in 2008; that very coalition would have been unstoppable and would have formed government against the wishes of a large majority of Canadians who had recently re-elected the Conservatives with an even stronger mandate.
Now you can call me cynical but from where I sit the only possible reason that I can see that the opposition would want to make these very short sighted changes, which could severely limit a PM from acting on behalf of the nation on some yet unseen crisis in the future, is that they are making plans for a coalition redux, and this time they are making sure in advance that nothing is going to get in their way.
Not convinced? Take a look at the some of the strange things that have taken place over the last couple of weeks.
Jack Layton said that he was not going to take part in the Liberal photo op in Ottawa on the 25th, but when the day did arrive Jack was there smiling as always for the ever present cameras.
Michael Ignatieff stated that he supported the power of prorogation, but come the 25th of January he totally flip flopped and proposed limits. (Ok, Ignatieff flip flopping is not that strange, in fact it is the norm, but the timing of it makes the decision very suspect.)
Jack Layton stands by and watches the Liberals basically steal the NDP idea and says nothing about it, other than that he is going to consult with the other parties on the issue. ( FYI: This is what happened the last time Layton consulted the other parties.)
BTW, we already have mechanism to deal with accountability and government abuse in Canada. It is called an election, and I suggest that if Layton and Ignatieff are really that concerned that they stop pandering to the cameras, stop the rhetoric, and do the only real democratic thing by voting the government down and then go to the people of Canada in an election.
We shall see just how concerned they really are come March, but I would not be holding my breath.

Bizzaro Copenhagen
Just a couple of things that happened at the summit in Copenhagen that leave me wondering.
How is it that Jack Layton, the guy rallying against the HST because the increase in taxes will harm families, can be in favour of the proposed fund of upwards of 200 billion dollars collected from the 'developed' countries (including about 30 billion from Canada) ? Wouldn't taking 30 billion dollars from Canadians and their families be a much greater burden than the HST would?
Was Al Gore trying to make sure that the "Gore effect" did not happen again when he called for the world leader to meet in Mexico in July rather than the proposed date in late fall? I mean what are the odds that it would snow in Mexico City in July?
Why did the PM get such a rough ride from the same media and lefty environmentalists who were falling all over themselves praising Obama? Hasn't the PM said on numerous occasions that our AGW policies would mirror those taken by the US? But in the press Obama = good and Harper = bad, even if they have the exact same goals for CO2 reductions.
Why is it that Canada who responsible for only 2% of the worlds total CO2 emissions gets all sorts of grief when China, currently responsible for 22% of those emissions, gets treated with kid gloves? Even more interesting is that in the last few years China has increased its emissions by about 10% a year, or in more simple terms they have increased their yearly output a total equal to our total output. Yup Canada is the problem. More fossil awards please.
And lastly where were Ignatieff and the Liberals? We know that if Dion was still leader he would have went to Copenhagen, so why didn't Ignatieff go?
Oh I almost forgot, what about the science?

December 01, 2008. Happy Anniversary you Coalition fans.
It was exactly 1 year ago, December 1st 2008 when perhaps the most divisive move in the history of Canadian politics took place as Stephane Dion, Gilles Duceppe, and Jack Layton signed the coalition agreements.
A coalition that if it would have come to take the reigns of power in Canada would have caused a "permanent division"* in Canadian society.

Jack Layton is proud of this.
Here is something to think about the next time you are sitting around the kitchen table.
Jack Layton boasts that the he and the NDP are proud of the fact that their party is NOT making parliament work. Jack Layton: "Look at the record – 79 times in succession it hasn't been the NDP that Mr. Harper has counted on to get support,"
Keep up the good work Jack. Keep showing Canadians exactly why they should not be voting for ideologues who would rather play games for their support base than try to work for the good of the country.

Jack Layton can't meet with Obama; attempts to have him arrested.
Breaking News from Ottawa.
Disgruntled because he will not be allowed to meet with US President Barack Obama today during his short visit to Canada; Jack Layton files a complaint with the RCMP to have Obama arrested for plagiarism.
Update: RCMP laughs in Layton's face.
Coming soon. Another AWM exclusive report: We are currently working on a story highlighting the hypocrisy of the left. It is regarding how the NDP along with all other left wing and environmentalist groups are totally ignoring the massive amount of CO2 emissions that are the direct result of this 5 hours visit only because of their excitement that The One is visiting Canada. The left didn't seem to like this kind of thing before.
Airforce 1, the motorcade, and that C-17 Globmaster that delivered and will returning those vehicles do not fill their gas tanks with hope and change just because Obama is President.
FYI the fuel capacity of the C-17 = 134,556 Litres.

In 9 months time....
If in 9 months time* the poll numbers look positive enough for the Liberals that they decide to pull the plug and try to force an election.
Will Jack and Gilles play along?
And if you think the answer is yes, could you offer up some reasons as to why you think they would do so after their 'coalition leader' Iggy just threw them both under the political bus?
As most adulterers know, sometimes those old bed partners can come back to haunt you.

That is very interesting Jack because as part of your deal with the devils of the coalition you had already agreed to totally reverse your position and now would support the Liberal view on the proposed Conservative cut to corporate taxes and that they would remain unaltered in a coalition budget.
Funny how with the coalition idea slipping away to the trash heap of Canadian political history that he now tries to spin it differently.
Or maybe he knows something that the rest of us don't.
Speaking of spin. Does this look like the future NDP line of attack on Iggy and the Libs?

It's either to prop up the Harper government and allow it to continue in a fashion that is clearly wrong-headed, or to pursue the agenda laid out by the coalition, which would create jobs for the future and would transform our economy and would really protect the people who are suffering the most from the economic crisis."

I will just put this quote here because Layton seems to want to now use the term coalition as a negative when up until this morning it was the greatest thing in the world.
