One new free trade deal with Peru becomes reality, with another deal with Panama just on the horizon.
Lets face it, the US economy is a mess and with their new President spending money at a historical pace, it may take more time for the US to recover from the recession than is currently believed. We can not put all of our eggs in one basket and even though the US is and always will be our largest trading partner, we have to try to look beyond our neighbors to the south and expand our markets. These 2 deals along with the recent free trade deal with Jordan are more positive examples of how the Harper Government continues to work for all of us while the Liberals do nothing but complain and get made up stories from the Liberal friendly press.

If Obama is allowed to implement his plans for the USA we might end up with as much trade with USA as we presently have with North Korea.

The USA needs Canada, period. In fact, I'd say they need us just a bit more than we need them. We could sustain ourselves for the next 50 years without them on natural resources alone - they can't say that at all. While I admit Obama is a screw up, even he can’t be that retarded.

Granted, generating free trade agreements with enough countries that would equal what we enjoy with the US is a tall order. But as more countries embrace democracy, free markets, and the rule of law, their middle class grows as does their value as a trading partner.
AA, I think it was Gabby QC, who mentioned that canada now has a $149m 'free trade agreement with PANAMA- I think I read this information at stephen taylor's blog.
This is good news for canada but very bad news to the liberals and their media since they were hoping for the worse.

But back to my healthy preoccupation with the topic, yesterday I attended the Leadership Summit and heard Andrew Rugasira address the idea of Aid vs. Trade. He's from Uganda and is the founder and CEO of Good African Coffee. Get this: Africa has 53 nations with 900 million people (trade partners anyone?). He touted Africa's population as exceptionally entrepreneurial -- who else do you know that can live on $1/day?
Jeff, sometimes people don't want to discuss good news and good policy. Bad news is so much easier to comment on; in fact, bad news is what the entire Liberal strategy is based on.

Cons & PMSH have gone ahead with FTA agreements with Colombia, Chile, Peru and at present are working on a FTA deal and increase trade with China and the European nations. So the Big O in the U.S. of A. better be careful with his Buy American, because he might find that the Canadian goods he requires are now going to be going elsewhere.
