A note to the rest of Canada from Edmonton.

Don't buy into the BS on Edmontonians reaction to the federal government not backing our Expo bid because the average Edmontonian could give a rats ass about it.

To date I have yet to meet one single Edmontonian who has even mentioned our cities Expo bid, and if I broached the subject, every single one said it was a waste of money.

Good to hear this is a construction of the msm. I thought you guys where against government bribing you with your own cash out in the west.

I agree, that this is good to hear, likely the only cities this would be a problem in are east of Ontario or Trawna.

Those cities would see it as a slap in the face, when most normal people would see it as a potential traffic nightmare.

Didn't Montreal just finish off paying for Expo 67...that was supposed to be a walk in the park and cost Montreal tax payers hardly anything...what a joke. The price they give at the beginning of a project and the price tag at the end is almost alway double or triple. Iam glad that Edmonton didn't get the nod...no one on city council consulted the taxpayer on this when they had their municipal election just a short time ago...it's all Mandels fantasy and Edmontonians nightmare

I thought Stephen Mandel and the head of the Chamber of Commerce were acting like spoiled little children. Stephen Mandel would cross the street rather than give Stephen Harper a good word. I was disgusted by their outbursts against the government. They need to grow up. i know it is disappointing, but come on, they would be the first to be complaining about the costs of such things in other cities.

Linda Duncan was so "outraged" with this decision in QP a couple of days ago.
Will she be re-elected or has she passed her best before date.

Complete BS is right! As an average Edmontonian I voted for the other guy in the recent election. Mandel loves spending our money on this type of crap. This city needs to purchase snow removal equipment and fix the roads.

"Didn't Montreal just finish off paying for Expo 67...that was supposed to be a walk in the park and cost Montreal tax payers hardly anything..." you say.

Might you be thinking of the 1976 Summer Games?

The debt incurred by Expo 67 was borne by all three levels of government and was paid off over four decades ago. Moreover, the planning for the exhibition always projected a deficit - though this ended up being much less than expected - due in part to record-setting attendance. In short, a grand success that those that followed have not been able to match.

The Bid had zero legacy publicly-accessible infrastructure in it -- despite the media moaning and the Mayor's ranting. The Expo jury told Edmonton way back it could only have a single site for the Expo and they chose the University south campus fields. Nothing for the river valley was in the actual bid submitted, just unbudgetted talk about future development potential or a "complementary site", etc. The Bid committee didn't come clean with Edmontonians about the legacy component at all.

Harper need the money to bribe Quebecers with a hockey arena. Then lets see how Edmontonians react.

A predictible reaction from a mediocre mayor, making the obvious play of "standing up for his city".

I would ignore the bleatings of these local yokel egomaniacs, and instead look at what's happening lately in the U.S., with the Tea Party movement. Specifically, it looks like there is now bi-partisan support for a two-year moratorium on "earmarks". I.E. the politicians are realizing that it's better for them to NOT try and "bring home the bacon" from Washington.

It seems like more American voters are looking at the big picture--what's best for the country, and not just their neck of the woods. I'll bet that same dynamic is happening here.

If so, that will bode well for the CPC, if Flaherty's austere budget turns out to be popular, thus putting Iggy in a bind.

The NDP mistake won't be around after the next general election.

It is a shame the Black Bloc won't have a chance impress the locals.

Liberals have no ideas or ideas that they would want to tell you about, so they are sowing the seeds of division hoping it works. You can always predict their strategies because what they criticize you for doing they are planning on doing themselves next. Psychopaths do this all the time. (real conservative)

I agree this would be a waste of money. The only issue I have is that every one had better be treated equally. Harper and Cons better stick to their guns and the austarity mantra they are spouting. If they do decide to buy into the Quebec arena and financially shaft other regions. My donations to the Cons will dry up and I will give them to my Provincial Party (Sask Party). I will no longer volunteer and will resign from the local EDA and do what ever I can to ensure the votes do not turn out to support our current MP.
