Unintended Quote of the day

Michael Ignatieff: "Canadians don't want political games played with infrastructure funding," Ignatieff said. "You can't employ people with press releases."

"Look at the field behind me, it is not getting done," Ignatieff said.

( Ignatieff was quoted above while among an old soy bean field in Burlington where they say no progress has been made on the creation of the New City Park.) (h/t Bruce. Part of the crew @ Blue like you.)

All well and good except: Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson said the Liberals picked the wrong field to stage their press conference. The park project just got environmental approval last week and wasn't planned for years.

"This project was not slated to be done for seven years," Jackson said.

He added he won't criticize the Tories or the provincial government on infrastructure spending because he has projects happening all over his municipality.

Updated with video: (Thanks Robert)

It is amateur hour at the OLO and Ignatieff is proving again that he is out of touch with Canadians and out of touch with reality.

Related: Even Ontario Liberal MPP's think Ignatieff is out to lunch on this one. (h/t Searching for Liberty)

Michael Ignatieff can't see the forest for the trees.

  1. How do Liberals benefit from attacking mayors, provincial MPP's and Premiers who are on board for those spending plans?

Do the CPC have double agents inside the "rosedale gang" making the Liberals do these public relations mistakes?

Why make Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson an enemy or put him on the hot seat?

If David Miller is too slow to fix a pothole will they be holding another press conference?

  2. Canadians are sick of political games period, but unfortunately for Ignatieff the Liberal are the Party of political games.

  3. You are right AA, this is definitely amateur hour on the OLO.

This is a Party comletely bereft of ideas. The only thing they have left is cartoon outrage, political stunts and fake "scandals."

And when that doesn't work, they picket Tim Hortons. Sad.

  8. I guess Ignatieff didn't study the liberal history first that it was the LPOC that made Drastic Cuts in funding to INFRASTRUTURE.

Where that money go is the question the media dare not ask.

  13. No, I don't have an email address for him, just the Ottawa Bureau Chief who was not the most cooperative with supplying answers.

  15. He set the bar so low when he allowed his NFLD MP's to embarrass him.
No, I didn't suggest they shouldn't have voted their conscience but that's not what happened. They spoke out before discussing.
    77 Liberal MP's...77 bossy bosses.

They aren't a team and Ignegative has never been a coach/team player from what I have been able to establish.

    That's what's going on here.
The guy could certainly be a King or Dictator, just not a coach or PM.....

"Narcissieff in the mirror of politics

My own sense is that he'll make a seriously bad candidate, due to what I'd call his narcissism. This isn't so much about adoring yourself, as being so self-absorbed that your sense of how others react to you goes missing. A therapist I know says it usually involves “a great deal of self-referencing. A real other doesn't exist except as an extension of themselves.” This won't be useful when you're asking for people's votes, against other candidates.

For instance: “I've been lucky in my life to meet famous people.” And, “I just pick up the phone and call some of my friends in his [the Obama] administration.” As if we should be impressed, or envious. He recounted how witty he and the Prez got with each other (“He said, rather amusingly …”). And how the President complimented him on things he'd written, which “made this particular Canadian author feel pretty good.” That stuff may go down well with adoring audiences at author readings but, in politics, it's better to have your flunkies leak it for you. We're not at Harbourfront any more, Toto."

    "Statesmen

A few posts ago I remarked that the world had gotten funny without my being able to laugh. I wrote, “The subjects have become so fantastic they are almost unreal. It’s like a horror movie where everybody is inexplicably funny. Maybe I should go have a beer.” The NY Post reports that a UN interpreter may need two six packs to recover his sanity after trying to interpret for Khadafy.

After struggling to turn Khadafy’s insane ramblings at the UN into English for 75 minutes, the Libyan dictator’s personal interpreter got lost in translation. “I just can’t take it any more,” Khadafy’s interpreter shouted into the live microphone – in Arabic.

At that point, the U.N.’s Arabic section chief, Rasha Ajalyaqeen, took over and translated the final 20 minutes of the speech. “His interpreter just collapsed – this is the first time I have seen this in 25 years,” another U.N. Arabic interpreter told The Post.

I’m afraid that as statesmen go, we ain’t seen nothing yet."

  22. OK so at first this looked like a dumb move, then it occured to me that Jackson is saying the project, which has to be completed in 20 months or it loses its federal funding under the rules of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, isn't going to even get started for seven years?

Isn't Jackson sort of accidentally backing the Liberal's point here?

  23. Isn't Jackson sort of accidentally backing the Liberal's point here?

    No

Jackson said that this park project wasn't slated to happen for seven years, that is until the stimulus program funding came through, it is going ahead this year, that's why they just completed the environmental assessment work.
